The 10th Annual International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC)

The 10th Annual International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IMMC 2024) Greater China Final Presentation Competition, hosted by College of Science of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), was successfully held on 26 and 27 April 2024. Prof. Chak Chung CHEUNG, Ray, Associate Provost (Digital Learning) of CityUHK, and Prof. Wing Cheong HO, Daniel, Associate Dean of Science of CityUHK and Chairman of Organizing Committee of the event, officiated the opening ceremony together with distinguished guests and Grand Jury members.

Prof. Chak Chung CHENG, Ray, and Prof. Wing Cheong HO, Daniel, officiated the opening ceremony of IMMC 2024 Final Presentation Competition of Greater China together with distinguished guests and Grand Jury members.

There were 53 top finalist teams out of nearly 1000 from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Mainland participating in the IMMC Final Presentation Competition of Greater China. Shenzhen Middle School, Shanghai American School, Diocesan Girls' School (Hong Kong), Pui Kiu College (Hong Kong), Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong (Macau), Sheng Kung Hui Choi Kou School Macau, Taipei Wesley Girls High School, and Taiwan Changhua Girls' Senior High School among the 23 teams were granted the Outstanding Award for IMMC 2024 of Greater China, of which 12 teams in Regional Contest, and 11, International one. The team from Shanghai High School International Division and Dongguan Zhongmei Middle School, respectively, won the Outstanding Award for the Junior High School category of IMMC 2024 Greater China.

Finalist Teams, Jury Experts and Distinguished Guests at the IMMC 2024 Final Presentation Competition Opening Ceremony on 26 April 2024 at CityUHK

As a leading global research university, CityUHK has inspired the IMMC participating students with its research achievements, educational programs, and top-notch teaching and research talents. In the opening speech, Prof. Ray Cheung welcomed the brilliant young minds to the stage challenging themselves to apply mathematical principle to solve real world problems. Prof. Cheung encouraged students to apply for Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT), one of the Flagship Programs of CityUHK, initiated by College of Science in meeting the global trend and talents need in innovation and technology.

In his greeting remarks, Mr. Steven DENG, representative of IEEE China and manager for business development, expressed IEEE’s continuous support for IMMC, the unique platform for STEM education to encourage young students to discover the beauty of mathematics and engineering.

Professor Yang WANG, Vice-President (Institutional Advancement) of HKUST and Chairman of Expert Panel and Grand Jury of IMMC Greater China, congratulated all the finalist teams for their achievements in the 2024 competition. In his commentary remarks, he pointed out that the whole educational landscape is changing because of nowadays the widespread use of AI. In the future, the ability to ask the right question is going to be the key objectives in education; on the other hand, students have to have the ability to find solutions of creative approach for problems that are open-ended.

In addition to the competition, a variety of interdisciplinary activities including laboratory visits and workshops were arranged for participating students and teachers to learn more about applications of mathematical modeling at CityUHK including visits to the departmental laboratory, State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution, and CLP Power Low Carbon Energy Education Center, Explorations of Sciences at CityUHK, workshops of Mathematical Modeling in Life Science, Amazing Neutrons: Making Movies for Proteins, The Exquisite Fusions of Mathematics and Physics, Recent Topics and Applications in Biostatistics, and High Performance Computing for AI Applications, etc.

IMMC 2024 in Greater China Region functioning as a selection mechanism for IMMC International Contest, is an independent and interdisciplinary practice integrating mathematics with science, technology and engineering and applying mathematics in socioeconomic context, and encouraging students to identify, analyze and solve real world problems of importance. The papers recognized as Outstanding and other award categories cover different types of problem including:

Lake pollution control towards sustainable development (Problem A-Autumn);
The roof in cloudburst (Problem B- Autumn), Universal sports (Problem C- Autumn-Junior High School only);
Reducing CO2 emissions in a production plant (Problem D- Winter);
2201: A space odyssey (Problem E, Winter);
Optimizing the deployment of surveillance cameras (Problem F- Winter-Junior High School only);
problems self-chosen; and
International Problem, Picking the perfect pet.

The 8 Outstanding papers of IMMC 2024 International Contest of Greater China were recommended by the IMMC Committee-Zhonghua for the Global Judgment by the International Expert Panel to compete for the international awards with the best teams from 36 registered countries and areas.

Q&A Session of IMMC2024 Final Presentation Competition International Round, 27 April 2024, CityUHK

Based on the expert panel's paper review and the Grand Jury's Final Presentation evaluation, all successful teams in the Chinese region were awarded various prizes, including the Outstanding Award , Finalist Prize, Meritorious winner, Honorable Mention and Successful Participants Prize.
